PCM Audio: Sample Rate, Bit Depth and Playback Explained

PCM audio is one of the foundations of digital sound. The initials stand for pulse-code modulation: a method of representing an audio waveform as a sequence of numerical samples. You encounter PCM when playing a CD, using a digital audio workstation, connecting a television to a hi-fi component or reading a DAC specification. Understanding it makes product pages and audio menus much easier to interpret.

What PCM audio represents

An analogue signal changes continuously. PCM describes that signal at regular moments in time. Each measurement becomes a number representing amplitude. During playback, a digital-to-analogue converter uses the sequence of numbers to produce an analogue output for amplification.

In ordinary hi-fi specifications, Linear PCM or LPCM usually means uncompressed PCM with uniformly spaced quantisation levels. The word “linear” helps distinguish it from companded forms used in some communications systems. PCM and LPCM are often used interchangeably in consumer menus, but the manual remains the authority for a particular device.

Sample rate, bit depth and channels

Sample rate

The sample rate states how many samples are taken per second, measured in hertz. A rate of 44.1 kHz means 44,100 samples per second for each channel. Higher rates allow representation of higher frequencies and can give filters more room to operate, but the number alone does not establish recording quality or audible superiority.

Bit depth

Bit depth describes how many bits are available for each sample. More bits provide more possible amplitude values and a lower theoretical quantisation-noise floor. Recording practice, mastering, playback level and analogue electronics also affect the result, so “24-bit” should not be treated as a complete quality verdict.

Channel count

Each channel has its own samples. Stereo therefore carries two channels; multichannel PCM carries more. A connection may support a high sample rate in stereo yet accept fewer combinations when channel count rises. Check the source, connection and receiving device rather than assuming that every advertised PCM rate works in every mode.

How much data does uncompressed PCM use?

The basic data rate is sample rate × bit depth × channel count. CD-format stereo PCM is 44,100 × 16 × 2, or 1,411,200 bits per second before file or transport overhead. Our Sony DVP-S7000 review documents a period CD/DVD transport used in this signal chain. A 96 kHz/24-bit stereo stream contains 4,608,000 bits per second. This arithmetic describes data volume, not musical quality.

Lossless codecs such as FLAC or ALAC can reduce storage and network bandwidth while allowing the original PCM sample values to be reconstructed during decoding. Lossy formats such as MP3 and AAC discard information according to their encoding model. The file extension alone is not always enough to identify the audio: WAV, for example, is a container that often holds PCM but can hold other formats.

Where PCM appears in a hi-fi system

Digital playback commonly moves through several stages. A player reads a file or stream. If the source is compressed, software or hardware decodes it. Digital signal processing may apply volume control, bass management, room correction or mixing. Our Z-Systems RDP-1 review looks at a dedicated digital processor in a hi-fi system. The DAC then receives PCM or another supported digital representation and produces analogue output.

This is why a TV or console may offer a setting labelled PCM even when the original soundtrack was delivered in a compressed codec. Selecting PCM generally asks the source device to decode compatible audio before transmission. Selecting bitstream instead of PCM generally sends an encoded stream for the receiving component to decode. Exact behaviour varies with the source, app, connection and receiver.

PCM support is input-specific

A single product can publish different limits for USB, optical and HDMI. Denon, for example, specifies up to 384 kHz/32-bit PCM for the DNP-2000NE’s rear USB-DAC input. The PMA-900HNE product page lists PCM up to 192 kHz/24-bit for its optical and coaxial inputs. The Denon Home Amp manual lists two-channel Linear PCM from 32 to 192 kHz at 16, 20 or 24 bits over optical.

Those figures describe accepted input signals, not proof that one product or rate will sound better. They also should not be transferred to a different connector or model.

Common PCM misunderstandings

  • PCM is not automatically a file type. It is an audio representation that may be carried in a container, stream or digital connection.
  • Higher numbers are not a listening guarantee. Recording, mastering, conversion, level matching and the analogue chain remain important.
  • PCM does not always mean stereo. PCM can be mono, stereo or multichannel, although a specific input may accept only two channels.
  • PCM is not inherently better than bitstream. The setting often changes where decoding occurs, not the artistic content of the programme.

What to check before changing a setting

Identify the source format, the connection in use, the maximum channel count you need and the formats accepted by the receiving input. Then confirm what the source means by PCM: two-channel output, multichannel LPCM, a fixed sample rate or automatic conversion. If sound disappears or surround collapses to stereo, return to a known-compatible setting and consult both manuals.
