How To Change PCM To Dolby Digital on Samsung TV
While we have already addressed the PCM vs bitstream discussion and generated a lot of debate, there is more controversy when we change PCM to Dolby Digital on the Samsung TV models simply because the latter has more channels despite the fact that there is some compression when moving to Dolby.
On Samsung models that offer the option, go to Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → Digital Output Audio Format, then choose Dolby Digital. The names and available choices vary by model, source and connection; if Dolby Digital is greyed out or absent, start compatible content and check the external device and cable path.
Dolby Digital is a lossy codec that can carry up to 5.1 channels. Linear PCM is uncompressed and may be stereo or multichannel, so it is not automatically better or worse. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are lossless; Dolby Atmos and DTS:X describe immersive delivery and can be carried in different ways, so neither name alone guarantees lossless audio.
For example, Dolby Atmos can travel in lossy Dolby Digital Plus, lossless Dolby TrueHD, or Dolby MAT with lossless PCM and Atmos metadata. DTS:X can also operate in lossless or lossy forms. If the source is stereo, it normally remains front left and right unless the playback device uses an upmixer.
Choose Dolby Digital when you need a compatible 5.1 output and the receiver or soundbar supports it. Choose PCM for stereo or compatibility, and use Auto or Pass-Through when the TV and external system can preserve a higher compatible format. Dolby Digital does not “always win”; the source, connection and playback system decide.
Auto is a sensible starting point because Samsung says it outputs a format supported by the connected audio device. If Auto causes dropouts, missing channels or delay, compare PCM and Pass-Through against your model’s manual.
How to Enable Dolby Digital Plus on Samsung TV
To use Dolby Digital Plus on a Samsung TV that supports it, go to Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → Digital Output Audio Format and select Dolby Digital Plus or Auto, as offered by that model.
Dolby Digital Plus may be available only with a compatible HDMI ARC/eARC device and suitable content. If the option is unavailable, do not force it; use Auto and verify that the TV, soundbar or receiver, and connection all support the desired format.
